A Drop of Nectar: Epistle from Ngok Loden Sherab
With a firm ground of faith and a root of benevolent aspiration,
With a majestic trunk of a noble being thinking for oneself and others,
With blooming flowers of meditation, and providing attractive cool shade,
You are the gathering of exalted trees with sweet fruits of altruistic works.
From the space where it rests, triggered by the nāgas of bad thoughts,
In the midst of clouds of stupidity and flashes of lighting of attachment,
Amidst the crashing thunder of hatred comes the meteor of negative actions.
May you never be struck by it.
After birth, death approaches for impermanent embodied beings
Like a demon, with the sharp fangs of illness and old age.
Think of how it leads this throng of beings helplessly
Into great endless darkness and suffering in the unhappy realms.
Being aware of this abyss with immense misery
Exert strength of vigilance, as though one cares not for this body and life.
With a mind which is not slackened in crushing the foes of affiliations,
Don the armour of diligence and hold the fortitude of patience.
That which destroys death and dries up the ocean of suffering,
Cultivate the precious thought of awakening, the source of happiness.
Those persons who pursue selfish goals, either in existence or in peace,
See them as inferior and place them both as objects of compassion.
To the freedom-mansion with stairs of six perfections,
Surrounded by the strong fences of relinquishing propensities,
And adorned by walls of wisdom and the drumbeat of benevolent actions,
You must climb and engage in strategies to also lead others there.
So that the supreme elixir, the teachings of the Buddha,
Which quells all illnesses of suffering, is not wasted having obtained it,
One must, without violating the precepts set by the supreme sage,
Observe the practices and follow the noble master.
Engage in virtuous conducts and embrace altruistic purposes
Rely on the noble conducts which stirs faith in the world.
Quell the agony of afflictions with the cool shower of learning
Which flows gently from the cloud that is one’s master.
Having soaked the seed of buddha-nature,
Make the wholesome harvest of the Buddha’s qualities boom.
The entrance to the nature of emptiness, the state of all things,
That which is taught in the scholastic works of Nāgārjuna,
Fathom it through the wonderful works of the commentator, the lord of logic,
Discard other ignoble traditions like a weed.
Many who have come here and are known as scholars
Are not erudite in the books but led by their wrong conceptions.
They veer to the two extremes and assault the right path.
Do not heed their words and abandon the path taught by Nāgārjuna.
Those who desire to maintain things with aspects through logical reasoning
And those who ascertain the validity of a reality transcending conditioned phenomena,
Both are trapped in the jaws of the terrible demon of substantialism
And are clenched very tightly by the sharp fangs of view.
Instead of maintaining in the mind that ‘these formations do not exist’,
They hold either the very things that appear or their ultimate negation.
Both these persons seriously digress from the correct path,
And fall on the miserable wide plains of wrong views.
'The non-dual illusion’ or ‘the middle in which all phenomena does not remain,’
Such distinction of two systems are marvels to the ignorant.
The multitude of things which appear to inferential cognition, which focuses on negation,
Are neither affirmed nor negated by the wholesome cognition.
Know that the cognition which engages in the objects and maintains its veracity
Negates its object but does not affirm another.
Just as the thought in a dream,
Which thinks ‘the town has disintegrated’,
Cannot find its imputed object, the disintegration of the town
In the same way the town cannot be found.
On the ultimate level, the so-called ‘non-existent’,
Which is an object imputed by the grasping mind,
The non-entity left after negating the true entity
Cannot exist because the true entity does not exist.
Thus, for that which has no object [existence]
There cannot possibly be a negation [non-existence].
Therefore, when there is not a thing to negate
With a thought ‘this does not exist’,
Then, the negation being without support
Cannot remain in the realm of the mind.
In this way, there is neither existence
Nor is there negation of existence.
There is no entity beyond the two
Which can possibly become an object of grasping.
As a result, all engagements of the mind
In the aspects of phenomena will cease.
In the total pacification of the host of fabrications
And on the matter of non-self, properly rest the mind.
Through being accustomed to emptiness in this way
When all grasping to existence is pacified
And one cannot even grasp non-self,
Then, one is said to have proper insight.
When all stains of views
Are cleansed by the wisdom water,
Then, one is in utter peace without apprehension
Of the mind which knows or the thing to be known.
Like the example of pouring water into water
Or like oil entering oil,
When the ultimate object free from fabrications
Is inseparably coalesced with the pristine wisdom,
It is called the dharmakāya,
The nature of all buddhas.
From this, like in a mirror, arise false appearances
Which are as diverse as phenomena
And which remain as long as the world exists.
This is the enjoyment body of the buddhas.
The former is the knowledge of profound thatness
In the state of unmistaken absorption without mental engagement.
The latter is the knowledge of multiplicity
In the state of illusive display of post-meditation with mental engagement.
The myriads of emanations of buddhas
Are appearances in the minds of others.
They are analogous to Sakra’s reflection and so forth
Which are taught in the sūtras.
In this manner, having churned the milky ocean of the Mahāyāna teachings
I have obtained his nectar from the line of masters.
In order to enhance the altruistic actions to help others,
I send you my prayers having put them in the form of this epistle.

This, which causes to increase the righteous conducts of the noble ones, along with much cherished liturgy for Bodhisattva vow, is submitted by the monk Loden Sherab.

The epistle entitled ‘Drop of Nectar’ was sent to Gatön Sherab Drak and the monks of Tsong Kharusum.
