Description Teaching by Sangye Nyenpa Rinpoche on The Way of the Bodhisattva. This video covers chapter 5 and is part 1 of 10.
Description Bodhicitta has been characterised as kindness, compassion, and the wish to release all beings from suffering. This is correct but does not convey the complete picture. Bodhicitta also involves freeing beings from the causes of suffering. Everyone wants to be free from suffering, but does everyone want to be free from happiness? Probably not, but from the bodhicitta point of view happiness is also problematic, because happiness is a fabricated condition and cannot be trusted or relied upon. A bodhisattva wishes to free sentient beings from all phenomena: this is what makes bodhicitta unique. Bodhicitta is more accurately characterized as the union of wisdom and skillful means, with the aspiration of awakening all beings to the truth.
Description Kyabje Thrangu Rinpoche offers instruction on practicing patience or forbearance, as explained in Shantideva's treasured text, A Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life. The 1,000-year old text, prized in all lineages of Tibetan Buddhism, provides methods by which the depths of our compassion and wisdom can be revealed. So revered is this text that the prominent 19th-century Nyingma teacher, Patrul Rinpoche, who lived as a wandering ascetic with very few possessions, was said to have always carried A Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life with him and was constantly teaching the text. Similarly, His Holiness Tenzin Gyatso once said, "if I have any understanding of compassion and the practice of the Bodhisattva path, it is entirely on the basis of this text that I possess it." Kyabje Thrangu Rinpoche will help us understand Shantideva's sixth chapter on "Patience". (Source Accessed Oct 8, 2021)
Description His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama teaches in a traditional line-by-line commentary of the Mahayanottaratantrashashtra in this video from Holland in 1986. Alexander Berzin interprets His Holiness into English. Seven diamond-strong points of the in five chapters, the first four points, which introduce "the source", or buddha-nature, are presented in the first chapter, the second chapter discusses the fifth point, the state of purified growth of enlightenment fifth point, the third chapter presents the sixth point which is the qualities of that state of purified growth, the fourth deals with the seventh point, the enlightening influence, and the fifth chapter discusses the benefits of studying the text. The text itself discusses the clear light nature of the mind which is covered over by cognitive and afflictive obscurations. Once these obscurations have been purified, the clear light nature of mind is revealed.

Description Ven. Chodron begins explaining the second method for generating bodhichitta - equalizing and exchanging self and other.
Description Session 1 on Sunday, March 10, 2024

Words of My Perfect Teacher is the most recent of our texts in this series of teachings. The great scholar-yogi Dza Patrul Rinpoche (1808-1887 CE) composed it while on solitary retreat. The texts begin with the common preliminary teachings on impermanence, karma, and suffering – topics that lead the mind towards dharma. The topics of refuge and bodhicitta are elucidated with a rich variety of analogies and stories that inspire the mind and heart with their relevance. The second part of the text covers the uncommon preliminaries – gateways to the Vajrayāna such as mandala offerings, Vajrasattva Practice, and the Chod Severance.

Description Venerable Thubten Chodron begins Chapter 5 of Shantideva's Engaging in the Bodhisattva's Deeds, on 'Guarding Introspection.' She covers verses 1-5, and also leads a discussion about how to work with fear that arises in relation to difficult topics in the lamrim.

The Greek word eudaimonia (literally "the state of having a good indwelling spirit") refers to a state of optimal flourishing and well-being that is independent of circumstances. From a Buddhist perspective, the components of eudaimonia encompass both: insight into the nature of reality and unbiased compassion for all beings.

With profound insight and wisdom, Geshe Dorji Damdul will guide us through Nagarjuna's Commentary on the Awakening Mind (Bodhicittavivāraṇa) so that we can cultivate tranquility and awaken (bodhi) to the actual nature of existence. Description The Mahayana Uttaratantra Shastra is one of the five great treatises given by Lord Maitreya to Asanga. It is a commentary on the teachings of the third turning of Dharma wheel in explaining the buddha-nature. Many great masters say it can be revered as a “commentary bridging the Exoteric and Vajrayana Buddhism”. It provides an important philosophical foundation for understanding the workings of the Buddhist path, particularly for Vajrayana practitioners.

Description Ringu Tulku presents the first of the six perfections (pāramitās), giving.
Description Few texts are more frequently taught and quoted, have as colorful a history, and as much relevance to Buddhists today more than the eighth-century Indian Buddhist monk Shantideva’s The Way of the Bodhisattva. The Dalai Lama has said that “if I have any understanding of compassion and the bodhisattva path, it all comes from studying this text.”

The living tradition of this text radiates most brightly from the Tibetan tradition where it was translated from Sanskrit in the ninth century and is central to all the traditions there, the Tibetan diaspora, and those receiving it in the West.

One singular aspect about the text is that unlike many of the important authored texts from India, it is fundamentally a practice text. As the Dalai Lama described it, “Shantideva composed his text in the form of an inner dialog. He turned his own weapons upon himself, doing battle with his negative emotions. Therefore, when we teach or listen to this text, it is important that we do so in order to progress spiritually, rather than making it simply a subject of academic study.”

In the spirit of this approach, Shambhala Publications and the Tsadra Foundation were pleased to host a four-day workshop on the text led by Wulstan Fletcher of the Padmakara Translation Group and recent recipient of the 2016 Khyentse Foundation Fellowship for his service to the Buddhadharma. Wulstan’s brief biography is below, suffice it to say there are few in the west who have worked as closely with this text and who can articulate so clearly its value, importance, and potential for us all. Wulstan was joined by several of the leading lights in Buddhist studies, translation, and teaching communities of Boulder, Colorado, including Sarah Harding, Holly Gayley, and Judy Lief.

This workshop will be a 360-degree view of the text, exploring its translation, history, commentaries, the famous ninth chapter on wisdom, and its relevance today. In particular, the intention is to present this text from a view of how practitioners today can really connect, relate, and use it in the way it was intended.

Wulstan is an extraordinary translator and scholar who has studied and gone through retreat with some of the greatest masters of the twentieth century. This workshop, which we plan to follow with many more, is meant to help impart the knowledge, experience, and wisdom from people like Wulstan to a new generation of translators, practitioners, and scholars. The Tsadra Foundation flew Wulstan in from France to give us this rare opportunity to engage with him and this extraordinary text that has been so fundamental for so many.

Description Venerable Thubten Chodron begins reading from Chapter 8, "Meditation" of Shantideva's "Engaging in the Bodhisattva's Deeds." She gives commentary to verses 1-3, identifying attachment to the wonders of this life as a key distraction in our meditation. She draws on chants from the ordination ceremony to give inspiration for how and why we need to give up attachment in order to attain lasting peace and happiness.
