In this article Joseph Goldstein, a very experienced and influential Insight meditation teacher, explores his confusion about the apparent difference of opinion between different schools of Theravada Buddhism, Korean Ch’an and Dzogchen on the status of consciousness / awareness. His own tradition teaches consciousness is something transitory whilst Ch’an and Dzogchen believe awareness – pure awareness, rigpa, is the uncreated, unconditioned Buddha Nature, Tathagatagarbha.
