The skandhas, āyatanas, and dhātus<br>Should be understood as being like the element of earth.<br>The karma and afflictions of living beings<br>Should be understood as resembling the element of water. +
Improper mental engagement<br>Is to be known as being like the element of wind.<br>Being without root and not resting [on anything],<br>[Mind’s] nature is similar to space. +
It is unconditioned because its nature<br>Is to be without beginning, middle, and end.<br>It is declared to be effortless<br>Because it possesses the peaceful dharma body. +
Skandhas, āyatanas, and dhātus<br>Arise and disappear<br>From water-like karma and afflictions,<br>Just as the evolution and dissolution of the [world]. +
The luminous nature of the mind<br>Is completely unchanging, just like space.<br>It is not afflicted by adventitious stains,<br>Such as desire, born from false imagination. +
The three fires—the fire at the end of an age,<br>The one in hell, and ordinary [fire]—<br>Should be understood, in due order, as the examples<br>For the three fires of death, sickness, and aging. +
Having realized the nature of this [basic element] just as it is,<br>Free from birth, death, sickness, and aging,<br>The intelligent, due to giving rise to compassion for beings,<br>Assume the predicaments of birth and so on despite lacking their causes. +
The root of the sufferings of death, sickness,<br>And aging is removed by the noble ones.<br>[Such suffering] is born from the power of karma and afflictions,<br>[But] they lack it because they lack these. +
Due to their character of compassion,<br>They display birth, death, aging, and sickness,<br>[But] they are beyond birth and so on<br>Because they see [the basic element] as it really is. +
[Despite] their realization that this true nature<br>Is changeless, the children of the victors<br>Are [still] seen as [being subject to] birth and so on<br>By those blinded by ignorance—this is amazing! +
It is not produced through other conditions<br>Because it is to be realized personally.<br>Thus, it is wisdom because it is threefold awakening.<br>It is compassion because it teaches the path. +
Therefore, the means and the compassion<br>Of the friends of beings are supreme—<br>They have attained the sphere of the noble ones<br>And yet show themselves in the sphere of naive beings. +
Being beyond all worlds,<br>They do not move away from the world,<br>Conducting themselves in the world for the sake of the world<br>Without being tainted by worldly stains. +
Their mind [set] on accomplishing [beneficial] activity<br>Is perpetually blazing like fire,<br>While always being immersed in<br>The absorption of the dhyāna of peace. +
Through the power of the continuing force of previous [actions]<br>And through being free from all conceptions,<br>They do not [need to] make any efforts<br>For the sake of maturing living beings. +
Knowing who is to be guided in which way by what,<br>They [guide] those [beings] in just that way<br>Through teaching, the rūpakāyas,<br>[Various forms of] conduct, and [daily] behaviors. +
